If each week, every villager spent, at least one pound
the difference it would make could be profound. Don’t forget the post office that needs our business as well
[I’m on a roll here as you can surely tell! ]
I think you’ve got the picture; you know what you need to do. Let it be known that Berrynarbor is a community who pull together,
Supporting our facilities so they’re not lost forever. Along the window ledge, a wasp
still winter-numb, crawls languidly,
not as in summer, when buzzing angrily
he flies about my head, competing
for the juicy peach I am eating. I view him now with different eyes,
greeting him with pleased surprise
as a first sign of spring,
observing
his gauzy wings outstretched,
his golden body, etched
with black, tiered like a Chinese tower,
his sting with its latent power. Now he crawls along the sun-warmed board
harmless as a sheathed sword.
Her haunting saga set in Yorkshire, ‘Wuthering
Heights’, was published a year later under her pseudonym of Ellis Bell. It was
only after her death, from tuberculosis – like her other sisters and brothers –
that the book became accepted as one of the most important novels of the 19th
Century. Her poetry, too, is now considered amongst the most significant of the
period.
I was just a back-up singer.” Predictably, the album became highly-sought after when Blondie took off, reissued and stickered “Featuring Debbie Harry”. Although hugely successful, Blondie were often misread or savaged during their late 70s, early 80s peak. Now they’re often summed up by a few glorious hits and Debbie as all-time female pop icon.

on gauzy wings, they sweep and soar,
poise on a water-lily pad

But their impact and influence on popular culture runs much deeper. “‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the
house,Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,In hope that St. Nicholas soon would be there.” Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock,
‘Now they are all on their knees ,
An elder said as we sat in a flock
By the embers in hearthside ease. We pictured the meek mild creatures where
They dwelt in their strawy pen,
Nor did it occur to one of us there
To doubt they were kneeling then. Patricia was educated at Exmouth Grammar School, Exeter
University and St. Hilda’s College, Oxford. She then worked in Italy for 7
years before returning to lecture in English at Goldsmiths College, London. After her marriage in 1964, she returned to live again in Devon, and to write
her poetry.
Walter de la Mare was born on 25th April 1873 in Charlton, Kent. He died on 22nd June 1956 in Twickenham, Middlesex, and is buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Into the half-pound box of Moonlight
my small hand crept,
There was an electrifying rustle. Into my open, religious mouth
the first Marzipan Moment went.
But Blondie’s popularity was undoubtedly on the wane and ticket sales were poor. The atmosphere on the US leg, still frayed by drugs, was appalling before they stopped after a Philadelphia gig with Genesis and Elvis Costello, when Stein fell ill. He was later diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called pemphigus which attacks the skin. With Blondie already ukraine dating brides undergoing a painful death, it put the band out of its misery. AutoAmerican’s negative press might have been one reason it only made No. 3 in the UK album charts, but it had been another courageous move. Now Blondie had made their experimental album, they shut down the album-tour conveyor belt to take a brief hiatus for various side projects.
Close the curtains; snuggle in for the night
As the owls hoot and the merlins take flight. The hedgehogs adore it, the squirrels too
Foraging around, so much to do. There’s food to be stored, time cannot wait
Now is the time to prepare to hibernate.
Supporting one’s faith and education; bringing unity. More of our facilities will be lost forever
unless we work hard and pull together. Bills are rising it costs a lot
but we need to hold onto what we’ve got. Coffee afternoons and quiz nights in the Manor Hall
Go some way but don’t pay it all. And while we’re at it don’t forget the community shop. We assume it’ll be there forever and a day
but we can’t assume that, whatever you say.
After two years of research, they pin-pointed the exact spot and after years of fundraising, the Blake Society has now been able to mark the spot with an official memorial. If thought is life
And strength and breath;
And the want
Of thought is death; Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live,
Or if I die. There’s lots to be thankful for as the festive season reaches its end. Goodbye Christmas with chocolate gifts and flowers
I’m ready to welcome spring with more Devonshire showers. Living here, in Berrynarbor, a truly wonderful place
Has certainly brought an enormous smile to my face. And now that the evil has truly past
We can go out again, enjoy walks at last.
Frank Infante busied himself suing over lack of involvement in AutoAmerican, indicating the degree of inter-band tension crackling away. Other diversions included their first stab at reggae on Die Young, Stay Pretty, and Sound Asleep’s delirious drift, inspired by the insomnia Debbie experienced on the UK tour. She said her Blondie character had now, “evolved into a creature who is like a mirror, reflecting and interpreting the songs… Now she has become more abstract and less female.” The full range of the record was heightened when it was released as the first video album. When Blondie returned to the UK in November (including first signs of Blondie-mania at Friars Aylesbury, but sound problems at London’s Rainbow), Chrysalis reissued the first album and budget 12” of Rip Her To Shreds.
To this day, Stein rates the chaos they caused as his favourite Blondie moment. The band hated the album’s black and white striped sleeve as Leeds had promised they could pick their individual images to work around the design but went with the only smiling shot headed by a variation on the Blimpie’s logo. Nobody seemed to notice when the album was greeted by across-the-board rave reviews then became their biggest seller to date when released in September, reaching No. 6 in the US and pole position in the UK. With the band tired and press still taking potshots, Blondie weren’t in the best spirits, until their cover of Randy & The Rainbows’ 1963 hit Denis(e) took off sufficiently to land the TV appearances crucial to breaking them in the UK, catapulting it to No. 2. The Roundhouse show was greeted with roaring euphoria from both fans and even press. Debbie, in all-white tennis outfit and knee-pads, was the nation’s new pin-up.
Many people will be familiar with his writing for children – The
Iron Man and Tales of the Early World. This second Ted Hughes poem, delightfully illustrated by
Nigel Mason, concludes the series on West Country Poets. Thoughts for future
series include love poetry, birds and beasts. Please
let me have your ideas, together with a suitable poem. Born in Boston, U.S.A., Sylvia Plath later moved to England where
she married the late Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes in 1956. Following her
separation from Hughes in 1962, she sadly committed suicide in London the
following year.

Just as the Nativity in nineteen o five. This cheese was created by Cypress Grove Chevre company in 1997 specially in a triangular prism shape since it is ideal for slicing unique portions and looks attractive on a plate. For producing ‘Bermuda Triangle’, the cheesemakers use pasteurised goat’s milk. It is coated with a layer of edible black ash, sprayed with mould cultures and ripened / cold stabilized for several days before being sold in the market. When young, the interior of the cheese is chalky white in colour with a smooth, firm and slightly crumbly texture. As it ages, the paste below the velvety white bloom rind starts becoming softer, lucid, and ultimately runny.
Instantly smitten by the blonde singer, Stein soon joined The Stillettoes, moving into Debbie’s Thompson Street apartment while he sub-let his First Avenue bolt-hole to a new band from Queens called The Ramones. After Debbie kicked drugs at an artists’ commune near Woodstock, she returned to New Jersey and attended beauty school, but was drawn back to New York by the new scene happening around the New York Dolls at the Mercer Arts Centre early in 1973. Every week the multi-roomed venue adjoining the Broadway Central Hotel attracted trans-sexuals, freaks and artists with bands forming in time-honoured boom style. “The New York scene dates back to the Dolls,” Stein later asserted. Thank you, Miss Parkin, for your delightful seasonal poem,
and thank you, Paul Swailes, for another charming illustration. Across the moors, past the quarries,
Down the narrow winding lanes,
Wild flowers flourish in all their colours,
The Sterridge Valley calling my name.
Stay, stay
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to evensong;
And, having prayed together, we
Will go with you along. My job is done, I’ve shed my seed,
My beauty’s waned tho’ but a weed. You did not walk with me
Of late to the hill-top tree
By the gated ways,
As in earlier days;
You were weak and lame,
So you never came,
And I went alone, and I did not mind,
Not thinking of you as left behind.
This little poem was written by a local police officer who
was stationed at the time in Combe Martin. He had been searching for a missing
man who was suffering from senile dementia. The man had gone missing many
times, but the police had always managed to bring him safely home until one
night he could not be found and the search went on for six weeks. He was found
on the edge of Exmoor in a hedge where he had Iain down to rest, fallen asleep
never to wake again. Much of his poetry is concerned with animals and his strong
sense of the beauty and violence of the natural world. His first collection was
the Lark in the Rain [1957], but he also writes topographical poetry about
landscape.
